How to Have a Great Passover Seder
by Mark Etinger
Okay, if this is your first Passover Seder, you might be a little stressed. No need though, because this article has all of the things you need to impress your friends and family and make it seem like your house is the one where all the cool kids have Passover.
1. When lighting the candles at the start of Seder or earlier, anytime before sunset, recite two blessings over them.
2. Next, bless all of the wine that will be drunk during the dinner, and after pouring a cup for everyone, don't forget the prophet Elijah. After everyone has had one cup, then pour the next.
3. When the Passover Seder begins, make sure that everyone has a Passover haggadah, and if you don't have the means to provide everyone with a book, photocopies work fine too. Wash your hands to prepare for eating the Karpas, the vegetable representative of coming spring that is dipped in salt water to represent the tears cried by our ancestors. This is the first item we will deal with from the Seder plate.
4. Break one of the three matzos on the table in half and hide it, for it is the afikomen and the children will have to find it at the end of dinner.
5. Begin reading the story of the Exodus and the first Passover. Have the youngest child ask the Four Questions and at the end of the story, bless the second cup of wine and drink it.
6. Next, bless the matzo with the ha-motzi prayer, and then a specific matzo prayer. Eat a bit after the blessings are said.
7. Bless the maror, which is usually raw horseradish, and symbolizes the bitterness of slavery. Dip the maror into charoset and eat it. Make a matzo, charoset, and maror sandwich and eat it too.
8. Eat a delicious meal, and as long as it is kosher and excludes unleavened food, or chametz, it's okay by the Torah. Then let the kiddies find the afikomen and give them whatever you deem right.
9. For the third cup of wine, say the birkat ha-mazon and bless and drink the wine. Then pour a last cup of wine for all and allow a child to open the door for Elijah. Recite the last prayer over the wine and speak some psalms. Enjoy the wine and recline.
10. Close with a statement about celebrating the next Passover in Jerusalem with the coming of the Messiah, heralded by Elijah.
Make sure that everyone is comfortable and has a pillow on which to recline. There are many excellent kosher wines available today, which can provide welcome alternatives to the traditional Manischewitz. And while it is important to observe and respect why we celebrate on these days of Passover, it is also a time for Jews to come together and be happy. As host/ess it's up to you to make sure that everyone is satisfied and comfortable. Following these tips will make everyone want to come back to your house next year - so it's up to you whether you want them back or not!
